Right to repair: new consumer rights apply across the EU from 31 July

The Directive on the repair of goods becomes national law across EU countries, favouring repair over replacement. Consumers can request repair of products such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, phones and tablets even after the legal guarantee has expired, at a reasonable price and within a reasonable time.

Euro-area inflation edges up to 2.9% in July on surging energy costs

Flash estimates put euro-area annual inflation at 2.9% in July, up from 2.8% in June and still well above the ECB's 2% target. Energy inflation accelerated to 10.0% from 8.5% as US-Iran hostilities resumed, keeping pressure on the ECB ahead of its September meeting.

Autumn calendar confirmed: data management, lawyer-linguists and lawyers

After the ICT competition, EPSO plans Data Management Experts (AST3) on 6 October, Lawyer-Linguists for the Court of Justice (AD7) on 21 October, Lawyer-Linguists for Parliament, Council and Commission (AD7) on 4 November, and Lawyers (AD7) on 9 December. All dates remain to be confirmed.

German GDP grows 0.2% in the second quarter as exports pick up

Destatis reported that price-, seasonally- and calendar-adjusted GDP rose 0.2% quarter-on-quarter in Q2 2026, beating the 0.1% consensus, and 0.9% year-on-year. Exports increased while final consumption was subdued and capital formation declined.

Inflation accelerates to 2.8% in July, the highest since April

German annual inflation rose to 2.8% in July from 2.3% in June, above the 2.7% expected. Energy inflation jumped to 8.3% from 3.4% as renewed Middle East hostilities lifted oil prices; core inflation, excluding food and energy, is put at 2.4%.

Unemployment rises to 6.4% as the jobless total passes three million

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.4% in July from 6.3%, above expectations. The number of jobless increased by 71,000 to 3.007 million, crossing the three-million mark; a seasonal rise is normal in July, though this one ran slightly ahead of forecasts.

Merz coalition's reform package moves toward implementation after the recess

The 34-measure 'Programme for Revival and Employment' agreed at the start of July — roughly €10 billion a year in income tax relief for lower and middle earners, a pension overhaul, tighter sick-leave rules and a bureaucracy cut — now moves into the implementation phase as parliament returns from summer recess.
